Events

Commission

The events Commission is responsible for planning and holding events within KwaZulu Natal. Events range from Indoor Regattas to Head Races, Lane Racing and Coastal Regattas.

The following events are hosted in the province:

The Head of the Bay – This event hosted by Durban Rowing Club takes place annually on Durban Harbour

The Caney Cup – This is an event run as a challenge between Durban Rowing Club and the University of KwaZulu Natal Pietermaritzburg Boat Club.  The event consists of two legs home and away. The origins of the event date back to the early 1900’s when Durban Rowing Club comprised several ‘houses’. These houses used to compete against each other for the Caney Cup.

Hilton Regatta – This event run by Hilton College takes place in October and has earned the name Octoberfest Regatta

Midmar Long Row – This event is organised by Henley Midmar Boat Club on the closest Sunday to the shortest day of the year

KZN Indoor Championships – this event is organised by KZNRA and will be held at the Kwa Mashu Indoor Centre

KZN Championships – This event is organised by KZNRA

Running a Regatta?

Here is some useful assistance.  You will need to comply with the laws pertaining to events as laid out in the Act.  Depending on the size of the regatta, number of competitors, number of spectators and the area it covers, different parameters will need to be achieved before you will be permitted to host the event.

You will need some or all of the following:

  1. Disaster Plan for Regattas
  2. Police clearance to host the event
  3. A venue
  4. An Organising Committee
  5. An Invitation to participate to be sent to prospective clubs
  6. Accommodation or recommendations thereof for athletes and officials
  7. Water rescue (if it is a water regatta)
  8. Land Paramedics
  9. Refreshments
  10. A Regatta Program
  11. A list of events
  12. A Public Address System
  13. Prizes
  14. Memorabilia
  15. Officials Equipment
  16. Officials
  17. Parking
  18. Ablutions and refuse removal
