Environmental Issues

Our Environment

Where we row

Our environment consists of three main attributes, water, land and air. All of these are interrelated and dependent on the health of the others. Sadly our environment suffers from contamination in all three spheres. Pollution takes many forms and the natural processes in the environment ensure that these contaminants flow between all three. For example a plastic bottle tossed on the ground can be blown by wind into a dry river bed. After it rains the river transports the bottle to the sea where it may lie dormant for years until finally broken down into microscopic particles of plastic. Evaporation transports these particles high into the atmosphere where they condense as clouds. The microscopic plastic particles fall with the rains on farmers fields and are consumed by  plants or animals and in turn by humans in their food. This over-simplified example shows just one possibility.

Land Pollution

The land is polluted an many ways

Oils, chemical spills, refuse, medical bio-hazard spills

Air Pollution

Chemical spills, smoke, exhaust fumes, un-burnt combustion chemicals, medical bio-hazard spills

Water Pollution

Oils, chemical spills, sewage, pesticides, heavy metals, fertilisers, rubber, plastic
